In her work, Maya Briner is interested in exploring choreographic methods with a view on the architecture of body, space and consciousness. Through creating dance works, performances, place-dependent works, and collaborations with theaters, video and sound artists and media combinations.
She graduated from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, studied philosophy and political science, and graduated from the Directing program at Sam Spiegel Film and Television School in Jerusalem.
She was awarded the status of an outstanding dancer in the IDF, working as a dancer in leading companies and ensembles in Israel and with various choreographers, including Noa Dar, Ronit Ziv, Renana Raz and Emanuel Gat. From her work as a dancer she began her career as an independent choreographer and in 2011 joined the Choreographers’ Association.
Her works have been performed at many festivals, including the Intimadance Festival, A-Genre Festival, Bat Yam Festival, the Israel Festival, and for four consecutive years at the Curtain Up Festival.
Winner of the America-Israel Cultural Foundation’s Creative Award for her work “Between the Bed and the Floor”, winner of the Teva Art Award for her work “Red Ladies”, winner of the 2010 Minister of Culture’s Dance Award for Young creating Artist.
She has created choreography for plays at Gesher Theater, Habima, Orna Porat Theater, as well as for video art and cinema.
Conducts creative and movement workshops for dancers and actors.
2019 • “Synchronization Training” A work for 10 dancers in the empty pool of YMCA Jerusalem.
2018 • “Stair-Case” a work for 10 dancers in the public space created for the Bat Yam Festival.
2017 • “Variations on Distance” A full-length duet that has been staged across the country and has received critical acclaims reviews.
2015 • “The Remembering Body” An interactive installation in collaboration with video artists, which includes a dance performance.
2014 • “The Nutcracker” Choreography for a concert for all the family on behalf of the ‘Israeli Chamber Orchestra’ conducted by Talia Ilan.
2013 • “Experiments in Hypnosis” Solo work for the Intimadance Festival.
2012 • “Crumbling Land” Quartet for Curtain Up Festival.
2011 • “Woods”, solo performed for the 2011 Curtain Up festival. The piece was commissioned for tours in China, Singapore, Italy, Greece and the Canary Islands during 2012/2013.
2010 • “The Show”, a duet that premiered at the Curtain Up festival.
2009 “Red Ladies” Trio for three dancers for the 2009 Curtain Up festival, commissioned by the Noa Dar Dance Group. The duet was performed in Germany, New York, Sweden and Italy.
2008 • “The Inner Outside”, video-dance work commissioned by the A-Genre festival, TmuNa Theater.
2007 • “Under the Nails”, a duet at Intimadance Festival, Tmuna Theater.
2006 • “Between the Bed and the Floor” A duet created with Aviv Ivgi and staged at the Ha’zira festival, Israel Festival. The duet was commissioned to perform at festivals in Shanghai and Riga.
2005 • “There is Nothing Sexy in Sponge” A duet performed as part of the Intimadance Festival at Tmuna Theater.
