About the author
Dege Feder studied education and creative arts at the University of Haifa. In 1999, Dege joined the Ethiopian dance company Eskesta as a dancer and co-choreographed some of the company’s works. As part of the dance company, Dege has performed at festivals in Israel: At the Suzanne Dellal Center, the Inbal Theater, the Lab (Ha-Ma’abada) in Jerusalem, the Haifa Theater, the Karmiel Dance Festival and more. Internationally: in Germany, Ukraine, France, Croatia, and South Africa. She has also performed in the US in New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago and more.
In 2005, Dege was a founding dancer member of the of the Beta dance company, founded by Ruth Eshel. She danced in the company and was a partner in creation of the company’s works until 2009. In addition to many performances in Israel, she performed with “Beta” Dance Company on tours and festivals in the US, Colombia and Poland.
In 2010, Dege was one of the founders of the dance company Tkesha under the direction of Haim Sheeran. The company, with the participation of Dege, performed and staged the works of choreographer Maya Levy. In 2012, Dege and Guday Bitewulin founded the Wozwaze Dance Company, which intermixed Ethiopian born dancers and native dancers and served as the company’s head choreographer and manager.
In July 2013, Dege took over the management of the Beta Dance Company, in which she acts as director, dancer and choreographer. In 2015 Dege has performed with Beta at Addis Ababa University, her work has been shown on Ethiopian television and recently she was invited to conduct a dance workshop at the Ethiopian National Theater.
In 2018, Dege performed at Jacob’s pillow, the famous dance festival in the United States. In 2020 she performed in Costa Rica and conducted a workshop for the National Dance Company, and performed at the University of Ohio where she conducted a workshop at the Dance Department.
Dege has collaborated several times with the composer Prof. Oded Zehavi. She performed in 2006 in a concert with the Haifa Symphony Orchestra in a song with his arrangement and in 2019 she performed with the Beer Sheva Symphony Orchestra in the work “Yasmin” written by Oded Zehavi. Prof. Zehavi also composed music for dance pieces of the “Beta” company.
